Is there a mandatory night shift allowance in India?

There is no universal statutory night shift allowance in India. However, many state-specific Shops & Establishments Acts and some sectoral regulations (like certain factory settlements) prescribe extra pay for night work.

How many hours is a shift in India?

Standard shift is 8 hours. Factories Act limits to 10.5 hours/day including overtime. Double shifts (16 hours) are prohibited. Shifts typically start at 6am, 2pm and 10pm.
