What is powder factor and how is it determined?
Powder factor (specific charge) is kg of explosive per BCM of rock blasted. It depends on rock hardness (RMR), burden-spacing design, desired fragmentation size and explosive energy. Hard granite may need 0.5+ kg/BCM.
What types of explosives are used in Indian mines?
Bulk emulsion (most common in open-cast), ANFO, Slurry/Watergel for wet conditions, and cartridge emulsion for smaller operations. All must be sourced from licensed manufacturers and stored in licensed magazines.
What licences are required for explosives in mining?
Under Explosives Act 1884 and Explosives Rules 2008: Licence for manufacture, storage (magazine), transport and use. PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation) is the regulating authority.
