How do I calculate nurse staffing?

Nurses per shift = occupied beds ÷ patients-per-nurse ratio. Multiply by shifts per day and a leave-relief factor for the daily headcount.

What is a leave-relief factor?

A multiplier (often 1.3–1.5) that adds nurses to cover weekly offs, leave, training and absenteeism.

What nurse-to-patient ratio should I use?

It depends on acuity — roughly 1:1 for ICU, 1:4 for high dependency and 1:6 for general wards.
